How to Disable Annoying On-Screen Keyboard in Windows 10 (or 8)

What can I say? I really enjoyed the update to Windows 10. The new OS is really slick and nice, the transitions are pretty awesome. The mail app is actually fantastic (integrates well with Gmail!). Its been a pretty sweet affair so far….

Except for one nagging issue – There is an On Screen Keyboard that pops us each time I login to the system! I understand it is essential for a tablet or a touch screen device, but mine is a plain Jane old school non-transforming laptop! Why does Microsoft think I need an onscreen keyboard?

Anyway, I digress. Rant aside, I was sure I wasnt the only one facing this mild annoyance. Sure enough, the simplest of searches on Google brought up tons of people facing the same issue.

The sad thing though is that none of the main solutions worked! šŸ™ How can it be? I tried the top 3 solutions (Go into Settings-> Ease of Access.. or disable it from Windows Services -> Disabled)

The trick was actually pretty simple. When the OnScreen-Keyboard pops up the next time on your screen, follow the 3 steps mentioned below :-

1) Click on the ‘Options’ key bottom row, third from the right

2) Click on ‘Control whether OSK starts when I login’

3) Uncheck the evil button ‘Use On-Screen keyboard’……

And that’s it! The keyboard has not popped up anymore! The image below should hopefully help some of you out šŸ™‚

  1. Thank you so much, sweetheart. Had already disabled keyboard and handwriting panel in services, so that was not the problem. And Microsoft was not helpful at all.

    1. I’m glad it helped you out ! I fully understand the frustration….for something as basic as disabling a keyboard, Microsoft sure makes one run around a lot!

      Best regards,
      Vishnu

  2. My onscreen keyboard doesn’t even have a button that says options. Also unchecking the on screen keyboard button does not turn it off. It still pops up everytime I touch an input field. If i touch this input field with my finger right now it pops up even though I have that box unchecked. I’ve come to the conclusion that there is no way to turn it off. It’s stupid.

    1. Hi David, I was having the same issue even before my upgrade. But there is a solution!
I used this site’s instructions to stop my on screen keyboard popping up (http://www.hanselman.com/blog/HowToDisableTheOnScreenTouchKeyboardInWindows8.aspx), but it only applies to Windows 8 / 8.1. So, I’ve modified them for you:
Click the Search bar next to your Start menu
Type “services,” and open the app that it finds for you
Scroll down to “Touch screen keyboard and handwriting panel”
      Right click and select “stop”
Right click again, and select “properties”
Change the startup setting from “automatic” to “disabled”.
And just in case I ever have to reactive my on screen keyboard for some kind of typing emergency, I’ve got a link to the instructions at the top of my browser’s bookmarks; I highly recommend doing something like this for yourself too. Just in case.
      Hope that helps!
